Structured eInvoices and PDFs are not the same

A structured eInvoice carries named data fields that accounting software can interpret. A PDF may look like an invoice to a person, but it does not by itself provide the structured EN 16931 data Revenue describes for automated processing.

What structured means

UBL and CII represent identifiers, parties, lines, VAT breakdowns, totals and references as machine-readable fields. That enables deterministic validation and import without trying to infer values from page layout.

Where PDF still helps

A human-readable rendering can accompany a structured invoice in a business workflow, but the rendering is not a substitute for the structured document when an eInvoice is required.

What to test now

Confirm that your software can export, receive, parse and retain the original structured document. Then validate representative invoices, credit notes, VAT categories and adjustments.
